Brian Dunham did his 3 year
apprenticeship in Rights Administration in the Music
industry whilst at the Mechanical Copyright
Protection Society between 1966 and 1969. Having
gravitated to the smaller Independent Company in the
1970's he then operated independently for the past
20 plus years. He is known for his networking and
inter-personal skills and has built long-standing
relationships within the music industry.
After working at CBS Records he
joined Chrysalis Music as Administration Manager,
and went on to successfully negotiate a steep
learning curve working for a vibrant UK Independent
Company from 1974 to 1977, surrounded by artists as
diverse as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Leo Sayer,
Steeleye Span, The Climax Blues Band and Frankie
Miller. Brian was
offered the chance to run a small Publishing Company
called Marksman Music for the hugely successful
song-writer Barry Mason. He grasped the
opportunity and worked with Tony and Gaynor Sadler
and Justin de Villenueve. Brian worked at
Marksman Music for 15 months before joining Virgin
Music as their Copyright Manager and embarked on
another steep learning curve using his core skills
in Copyright and Publishing Catalogue
Administration. Whilst
at virgin he worked with Simon Draper, Ken Berry and
of course Richard Branson. Working in such an
active, acquisitive and thrusting company he picked
up new skills almost by osmosis. He worked up
to a General Manager position and was instrumental
in setting up the systems in the Paris and Los
Angeles offices of Virgin Music and generally
setting up the International Representation for the
catalogue. Brian worked on the Licensing of
Artists such as The Police, The Human League, ABC,
Culture Club, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark,
Mike Oldfield, The Ruts, The Members, Leon Russell
and tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
In 1982 Brian left to use his
skills in Music Licensing and as an Independent
Licensing Consultant specialising in Rights
Licensing for Music Television. From 1982 to
1984 he worked on "The History of Rock", "Soul
Train", "Earsay", "Top C's and Tiaras" and "The A-Z
of Country Music". Brian was invited to join
Mercury Music - Music Publishing Division of Granada
TV as their Catalogue Development Executive.
During this spell with Granada TV he was asked to
sort out the rights for release of the 'Marc' TV
series in video format. It was during these
negotiations that Brian was offered the opportunity
to work with the Wizard Music [Publishing]
Catalogue. Brian added
to his skill set by working with Trilion Pictures
Limited where 50% of the job involved negotiating
Sync Licenses and dealing with Artists Management
and liaising with venues and musicians arranging
video shoots for the Late Night London TV series.
Fol,owing this venture Brian ran a small publishing
company called Tembo Music for Roger Whittaker.
He was still hugely successful in Germany but was
looking for fresh initiatives in the USA.
during these two years with Tembo Music, Brian
placed an album deal with Heartland Records for
Roger Whittaker and arranged the video shoot for the
advert that went out across the US on TV. the
album went on to sell over a million copies in the
US. Having started work
with Wizard Music [Publishing] Catalogue back in
1985, Brian began immersing himself in promoting the
catalogue for synchronisation usages. The
breakthrough came in 1992 when the Ad Agency
approached John Bramley seeking to use 20th Century
Boy in the Levi's advert. This became the
springboard from which Marc's music was re-born and
spread around the world via the media of film and
television.
It
was in the early 1990's that "Born To Boogie - The
Movie" was released on VHS through Picture Music
International but it only enjoyed a modest success.
In 1998 Brian started the ball rolling aimed at
releasing a DVD version of the film.
Eventually the recognition of Rolan Bolan's
entitlement to share in the benefits from any
re-issue of the movie in DVD format enabled Brian to
strike the deal with Ringo Starr and Sanctuary.
Brian was appointed Executive
Producer to bring this project to fruition. He
managed to, aided and
abetted by, the ubiquitous Martin Barden, bring
together
such
important people as Tony Visconti, Bill Legend and,
of course, Rolan
Bolan, to work with Sanctuary. Together they put
Marc Bolan & T.Rex back at the top of the charts and
back on the top shelf with the release in May 2005
of the cleaned up and restored full version of "Born
to Boogie - The Movie"
plus extras. In the
2000's Brian has co-produced numerous Marc Bolan
projects including...
- The sell-out concert at
the Shepherds Bush Empire in 2007 named "The
Celebration". The show was recorded for
release on DVD through Liberation and will be
made available again through Demon.
-
“Bolanesque” – a Marc Bolan meets Cirque du
Soleil Cabaret Show at the Café de Paris to
celebrate what would have been Marc Bolan’s 60th
birthday.
Brian has always had a vision to unite the best
T.Rex songs into a musical . This brings
us to date where between Brian and Nicky they
intend to realise this vision and bring
Marc Bolan's life and music to the West End
theatre stage. |
